Job Description

*Position is dependent upon contract award

Principle Accountabilities:

· CNAs shall provide age-specific care based on Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) of the inpatient wards; specific health care provider's orders; the physical, mental and emotional needs of the patient; and the policies and procedures of SAMMC.

· Provide age-specific care based on Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) of the inpatient wards; specific health care provider’s orders; the physical, mental, and emotional needs of the patient; and the policies and procedures of SAMMC.

· Performs vital signs check, note deviations and ensure proper documentation. Perform blood pressure measurements and record as prescribed by the policy. 

· Provide for the safety, hygiene, personal care, activities of daily living, exercise, and turning and repositioning of patients. 

· Cleans and restocks procedure and patient rooms with supplies, forms and linen, dispose of trash and soiled linen, supplies, and equipment. 

· Assists primary care provides(s) with patient examinations. Set up examination room, assists patient to disrobe/dress according to level of assistance and required drape and position patient and chaperone as necessary. 

· Set up and assists primary care provider in specimen collection, label and document appropriate patient information, prior to transporting specimen to lab for processing.

· Observes patients for distress or changes in condition and report abnormalities to team leader or other senior nursing/medical personnel

· Be able to perform or assist with minor, acute, and routine primary care tasks in the inpatient setting in accordance with SOPs and training rendered under the supervision of a physician, nurse, nurse practitioner or other assigned personnel. 

· Observes, corrects or reports potential/actual safety hazards.

· Performs daily quality control checks on glucose test monitor. 

· Documents observations, care given, and patient's response in the medical record and under the supervision of the registered or licensed practical nurse.

· Communicates pertinent patient data to nurse, nurse practitioner or physician as appropriate and complete tasks assigned by the registered and licensed vocational nurse.

· Recognizes and initiate appropriate measures in emergency situations.

· Exercises the universal precautions set forth by the Centers for Disease Control when providing direct patient care and/or indirect patient care involving possible exposure to contaminated items at BAMC.

· Assists with administrative tasks, such as the admission and discharge of patients and answering the phone.

· Transports patients to other units or departments assuring safe transportation of the patient. Screen patients prior to transport to ensure preoperative medications have been given by the nurse, and that jewelry, dentures, and any prosthetic devices have been removed. Check patient chart and identification band for completeness.

Knowledge & Skills:

· A graduate of a training program/ course with a curriculum of certified nursing and whose qualifications have been examined by a state board of nursing that has been legally authorized to practice as a certified nursing assistant (CNA), under supervision of a physician, licensed vocational nurse or registered nurse. 

· All licenses shall be unencumbered and remain in effect during employment. Any changes to license must be reported to employer immediately. 

· Must have a minimum of one-year experience in a hospital, medical office or residential setting. 

· Continuous provider CPR/BLS certification required. 

· Maintains professional clinical skills via continuing education opportunities as required by state of practice. 

· Must adhere to practical nursing principals, procedures and techniques for appropriate patient care and take direction from registered nurses and onsite administrative personnel. 

· Must adhere to medication administration guidelines, understand pharmaceutical agents and their desired effect recognize adverse effects and take appropriate corrective measures. 

Physical Requirements:

· Required to walk unaided at a normal pace for up to 10 minutes and maintain balance. 

· Required to respond to any medical emergency within 4 minutes, where a fast walk or jog may be necessary to provide assistance. 

· Required to perform CPR/emergency care standing or kneeling. 

· Must have the ability to assist sick, injured or aging detainees or staff exiting the building during an emergency (may require lifting, dragging, wheeling or carrying someone who weighs significantly more than self). 

· Must be able to see, hear and smell with or without the use of aides if necessary. (Exceptions on a case-by-case basis). 

· Must easily alternate between kneeling and standing.  

· Must perform the duties in a stressful and often austere environment without physical limitations.
