Per Diem Cardiothoracic Surgery Physician Assistant (PA) Opening – Danbury Hospital, Danbury, Connecticut (60 miles from New York City)

Western Connecticut Medical Group is seeking a per diem Cardiothoracic Physician Assistant coverage for our long established CTPA program at Danbury Hospital in Danbury, Connecticut. We are located about 60 miles northeast of New York City and near the border of Westchester and Putnam Counties in New York. Under the leadership of Robert Gallagher, M.D., the department has 3 Cardiothoracic surgeons and 4 Cardiothoracic PAs. Our highly experienced CTPA team provides 24/7 coverage, including OR assist, inpatient consults, pre and post-op rounding, and office time. This is a seasoned team with a growing case volume that includes traditional open heart, CABG, valve, robotics, MIS, and TAVR.

The ideal candidate will be board certified physician assistant and have at least 3 years of Cardiothoracic specific experience, including OR assist. This is an employed full time or per diem position with Western Connecticut Medical Group.

Clinical Responsibilities:

·Assists the surgeon with major cardiac surgery operations and is directly responsible for the care of critically ill cardiac and surgical patients.

·Directly acts in the operating room during performance of technical cardiac surgical procedures.

·Provides the highest level of pre and post-operative care under the direction of the supervising physician.

·Assists the surgeon in the operating room, acting as first or second assistant during various phases of the procedure. 

·Administers intravenous therapy, inserts central venous, arterial lines by means of surgical cutdowns and venipunctures where indicated.

·Inserts nasogastric tubes and maintains suction decompression of the stomach as well as irrigation of the same tubes. Catherizes and maintains indwelling urinary drainage tubes.

·CTSDU management involving: arrhythmia supervision/treatment; line removal/insertion; chest tube removal; pacemaker manipulation; medication administration; and other invasive procedures.

·Manages ventilators in conjunction with respiratory therapists.

·Post-operative CTICU care involving admissions orders, medications, invasive procedures, CT insertion/removal, thoracentesis, Swan-Ganz catheter placement, etc.

·Cleans, debrides and sutures minor lacerations. Cares for wounds including debridement, I&Ds dressings, removal of drains and tubes, and suture removal.

·Performs cardiac resuscitation and defibrillation as indicated.

·Performs and records complete physical examinations.

·Makes daily rounds independently or with surgical team on patients with a variety of surgical conditions. Reports findings to the surgeon.

·Maintains patient care. Evaluates changes in patient status, writes orders, obtains consultations, interprets lab values and x-rays with assistance of physicians as necessary.
