Chief of Thoracic Surgery Opening - Western Connecticut Health – Fairfield County, Connecticut (50 miles from New York City)

Western Connecticut Medical Group is seeking a Chief of Thoracic Surgery to join a network integrated thoracic program with Chief responsibilities spanning our Connecticut based hospitals in Norwalk and Danbury, Connecticut.  Both Norwalk and Danbury are located in suburban Fairfield County, Connecticut, about 50 files from New York City.

Western Connecticut Medical Group is part of our newly formed network, Nuvance Health, which spans seven hospitals across the Hudson Valley region of New York State and Western Connecticut.  The network currently has 3 dedicated thoracic surgeons between Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie, NY, and Danbury Hospital in Danbury, CT.  Our three dedicated thoracic oncology surgeons have extensive experience in Robotics, VATS, esophageal surgery, open and endoscopic tracheal surgery, stenting, EBUS and navigational bronchoscopy. 

The incoming Chief will focus on growing a thoracic surgical program and leading a multidisciplinary thoracic oncology team at the Norwalk Hospital Campus. In addition, the candidate will be an integral member of the system team at the Danbury campus.

The cancer program at Norwalk Hospital has a unique collaboration with Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center that integrates MSK medical and radiation oncologists and care practices with the program at Norwalk. The thoracic oncology program at Norwalk Hospital and the Whittingham Cancer Center is comprised of dedicated lung cancer experts in radiation and medical oncology, nursing navigation and advanced interventional pulmonary medicine with integrated tumor boards and disease management teams. The Whittingham Cancer Center is home to the cancer outpatient clinics, linear accelerators and chemo-infusion suites, and is an ideal location for the expansion of a multidisciplinary lung cancer team. In addition, nationally renowned cancer researchers are based in the Danbury and Norwalk sites offering a  robust clinical trials portfolio with dedicated translational research funding and strong collaboration with PhD’s and physician scientists.

Norwalk Hospital has 366 beds and is a Level II Trauma Center with approximately 50,000 ED visits per year. There is a robust, employed pulmonary medicine group at both hospitals as well as appropriate support structure to allow for growth and expansion

The ideal candidate will be board certified in thoracic surgery with fellowship training in non-cardiac thoracic surgery, clinical experience in the management of thoracic diseases, and training in minimally invasive surgery and/or robotic assisted surgery and a desire to develop and lead an integrated thoracic oncology program at Norwalk.  A minimum of 5 years of experience with demonstrated leadership skills is preferred.   

In addition, the candidate should have a strong academic interest and participate in resident education and clinical research.  As teaching hospitals, we are associated with University of Vermont College of Medicine, Ross University, American University of the Caribbean, Yale School of Medicine and the new network associated medical school at Marist College. Opportunities for clinical and translational research exist and will be encouraged with ongoing research in areas of tissue bioengineering housed at a state-of-the art research facility located in Danbury, CT, supporting basic science research. 

Norwalk, Connecticut, is located just 50 miles outside of New York City in Fairfield County. Astride a hill with a commanding view of the Long Island Sound, Norwalk Hospital serves a varied and attractive region of Southern Connecticut. The hospital is just minutes from beautiful beaches, and places to hike, swim, and sail. Connecticut Magazine recently named South Norwalk as the “hottest” nightspot between Boston and New York City, with a variety of theater and restaurants to choose from. New York City is easily accessible by car or train.
