Job Description

Swedish Medical Group is seeking an Executive Medical Director of Surgery to provide physician leadership and strategic oversight for surgical and procedural services across Providence Swedish. This executive leadership role will guide clinical operations, quality, safety, access, patient experience, workforce engagement, and service line growth in both ambulatory and acute care settings throughout the Central Puget Sound service area.

The Executive Medical Director works in close partnership with operational, nursing, and physician leaders to advance a high-performing, patient-centered surgical enterprise while supporting excellence across multiple specialty and procedural service lines.

Leadership and Administrative Responsibilities:

  • 0.8 FTE will be dedicated to Executive Medical Director responsibilities supporting surgical and procedural services across Swedish.
  • Provide strategic physician leadership for surgical and procedural services across Providence Swedish.
  • Partner with operational and nursing dyad leaders to achieve quality, access, growth, financial, and patient experience objectives.
  • Lead initiatives to improve surgical quality, patient safety, clinical outcomes, care standardization, and operational performance.
  • Collaborate with institute, hospital, ambulatory, and medical group leadership to optimize surgical access, procedural throughput, and referral pathways.
  • Champion physician, APC, and caregiver engagement, leadership development, recruitment, retention, and professional growth.
  • Drive adoption of best practices, data-driven decision making, and continuous improvement initiatives across the surgical continuum.
  • Serve as a key physician liaison among medical staff, operational leaders, institute partners, and community providers.
  • Scope of oversight includes the following services: General Surgery, Otolaryngology, Urology, Bariatric Surgery, Orthopedic Surgery, Cardiac Surgery, Neurosurgery, Pediatric Surgical Services, Women's Surgical Services, Swedish Cancer Institute surgical Services, Pain Management Services

Clinical Responsibilities:

  • 0.2 FTE will be dedicated to clinical practice within the candidate's specialty, which may include General Surgery, Otolaryngology, Urology, Bariatric Surgery, Orthopedic Surgery, Cardiac Surgery, Neurosurgery, Pediatric Surgical Services, Women's Surgical Services, Swedish Cancer Institute surgical Services, Pain

Management Services

  • Provide direct patient care within the physician's clinical specialty
  • Maintain active clinical practice and hospital privileges as applicable
  • Support clinical excellence and evidence-based practice
  • Serve as a physician leader and role model for quality, safety, and patient-centered care
  • Participate in clinical call coverage requirements consistent with specialty-specific expectations

Qualifications:

  • Board certification in a surgical specialty required.
  • Current or eligible Washington State medical licensure.
  • Minimum five years of progressive leadership experience within women's and children's healthcare services in a matrixed healthcare environment
  • Demonstrated physician leadership experience within complex healthcare systems.
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary teams, quality initiatives, operational improvement efforts, and strategic growth programs.
  • Strong commitment to clinical excellence, physician engagement, patient-centered care, and collaborative leadership.
  • Advanced leadership training or graduate degree (MBA, MPH, MHA, or equivalent) is preferred

Compensation:

  • Compensation is between $510,883 and $618,076 per year. Compensation may be subject to productivity, quality, and other incentive provisions.
