Job Description

MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center is seeking a full-time Nurse Practitioner (Family, Pediatric, or Neonatal) to join our full term newborn nursery. Along with a neonatologist, pediatrician, or family medicine physician you will assume the medical care of normal newborns in the Mother/Baby unit, from the initial assessment on the day of birth, to subsequent day care and discharge planning and coordination. The applicant must also be proficient on basic newborn procedures including but not limited to blood and urine sampling and enjoy providing education to parents on the basics of newborn care: safe sleep, breastfeeding, jaundice, shaken baby syndrome, standard newborn screenings, immunizations, hygiene, infection prevention, and others. The hospital counts with a state of the art Level III NICU with 24/7 staffing who is always available to attend emergencies and help coordinate and execute transfer to the NICU to manage complicated or ill newborns. Our nursery also counts with dedicated lactation specialists, social workers and case managers.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education/Training - Graduation from a Nurse Practitioner program approved by the Maryland State Board Examiners of Nurses.
  • Experience - 2 years NICU/pediatrics nursing experience.
  • License/Certification/Registration - Registration with the Maryland State Board Examiners of Nurses. 
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities - Verbal and written communication skills. Basic computer skills preferred.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develops patient care management plans under the direction of the Neonatologist and/or nursery physician and in collaboration with nursing and social services.
  • Participates in consultation requests from residents and private pediatricians.
  • Facilitates ongoing communication among the parents, Neonatologists, attending physicians, consulting specialists, residents, nurses, and social workers in regard to patient management plans.
  • Provides direct patient care/evaluates outcomes, consults with other specialists as required, and adjusts nursing care processes as indicated to ensure optimal patient care.
  • Monitors medical condition and stability of patient and reports changes to physician.
  • Maintains a safe, comfortable, and therapeutic environment for patients and families in accordance with hospital standards.
  • Acts as an educator by teaching parents, families and other health team members on a formal and informal basis.
  • Performs basic newborn procedures including but not limited to blood and urine sampling.
  • Monitors and ensures accuracy of recording on patient medical records. Maintains all required reports, records, statistics, etc.
  • Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.
  • Collaborates with multi-disciplinary quality and service improvement teams.
  • Performs case management duties in the Nursery, including arranging transfer to the NICU, utilization review and patient charges, establishment and coordination of discharge follow up including primary physician, home healthcare, and subspecialty professionals.
  • Signs in/out rounds, IMOC rounds, carries out physical exam orders for all Nursery infants and regular and unplanned procedures, documents admission, subsequent day and discharge plans.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
