  • Inpatient Behavioral Health Unit: (24 hour care for those who need intense intervention for Adults, Geriatrics, and Adolescents).  Typical mental illnesses include anxiety disorders, depression, bipolar disorders, adjustment disorders, schizophrenia and secondary substance abuse.
  • Partial Hospitalization Program: (To allow those who need less intensive care to attend school or work for Adults, Seniors, and Adolescents).  The unit offers six hours of clinically intensive, structured care in a less restricted environment.  Patients have the ability to sleep and spend a part of their day in their home.
  • Intensive Outpatient Program: (For those who can function more independently for Adults, Seniors, and Adolescents).  The program offers three hours of clinically intensive care 3 days per week.

Practice Description-Psychiatry

A Psychiatrist is needed to join the hospital staff. Traditionally, the department has been staffed with 2 full time employed adult / adolescent psychiatrist and 1 NP covering the inpatient & outpatient units along with the ETC program (approximately 700 per year- No longer doing ECT as of 2014).  Additionally, the hospital employs a full clinical team of counselors, nursing, social workers, occupational therapists, and educational coordinators.  The department is also very active in the community organizations to promote the best possible care.

On average, the 20-bed inpatient unit admits 1,600 patients per year with an average length of stay of four days.  The 20-bed unit average census is 12-14.  On an average month, it can have between 145 to 150 admissions.  The unit is for male, female and adolescents.  The genders are separated (as well as the adolescent patients).  The facility averages approximately 2,900 emergency room assessment per year with voluntary and involuntary admission in the inpatient unit and averages 7.2 hours of care by nursing.  Predominately, the outpatient facility is 95% med-checks.

The current schedule for the 20-bed inpatient unit consists of two physicians rounding with the psychiatric care team (nurses, social workers and rehab specialists).  The physicians see the adults in the morning and adolescents in the afternoon.  On a typical day, physicians round on up to 10 patients per day.  Additionally, the physicians average about 2 admissions per day, as well as discharges, consults, and family meetings. The third physician will focus primarily on the outpatient practice, including the Partial Hospitalization Program. Typically, the work schedule is from 8 am to 5 pm, but can be flexible.  After hours, nursing would cover the unit and physicians will be on call with a 1:3 call schedule.  Physicians can expect between 4-6 calls after hours. The physician on call would cover phone consults after hours.  Weekend call is 1:6. Weekend responsibilities would be rounding on Saturdays and Sundays ,and then be available to take phone consult calls afterwards.

The unit is all computerized.  All admissions and transfers to the unit are preauthorized prior to the transfer.  Paperwork is sent to the unit, then evaluated and a decision is made as whether or not to admit.   Orders can be done over the phone by a computerized physician order entry (facility uses McKesson System) and the Electronic Medical Records are with the same McKesson system.  There are full time hospitalists on staff to assist with admissions after hours and on the weekends.  There is a full treatment staff that is made up of nurses, social workers and therapists, seven days a week, 24 hours a day.
