Job Description

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

Operating Room Registered Nurses are required to provide services for Veterans in the (OR) operating room and in non- OR locations within the VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System. As a member of a surgical team, the Or Nurse is expected to furnish assistance to the surgeon and other medical personnel during surgeries. The Or registered nurse is expected to coordinate with the medical personnel in initiating and executing complex treatments within the scope of the surgeon’s supervision. Skill in human anatomy, surgical procedures and knowledge of appropriate technology necessary to assist with invasive and diagnostic surgeries is a requisite. Duties include:

  • Principal scrub personnel for instruments supplies and equipment necessary in the performance open heart, thoracic, vascular, neurosurgery, ophthalmology, otolaryngology, orthopedic, urology, plastic and general surgeries
  • Preparation of sterile areas to include tools for surgeries, i.e., air-powered, fiber optic and laparoscopic equipment, microscopes, lasers, etc.    
  • Consultations with surgical personnel about upcoming surgeries to ensure all equipment is prepared
  • Preparation and completion of medical record information as designated by VAAAHS procedures. 
  • Availability for after hours and weekend call coverage for emergency procedures, to include availability in 30 minutes upon being notified as needed.
  • Professionalism in the surgical room and constant awareness of the ongoing procedure to assist the surgeon.
  • Demonstration of skill in the surgery being performed.
  • Demonstration of skill in sterile and aseptic techniques
  • Awareness of when consultation with a doctor is necessary
  • Performance of related duties as assigned by supervisor
  • Maintaining compliance with all company policies and procedures 
  • Maintenance of patient rights, safety, privacy, care and education
  • Continuation of patient care and preparation of referrals as necessary
  • Completion of Performance Improvement (PI) if assigned by Chief of Surgery for data collection techniques, report production and oversight measures

Education and/or Work Experience Requirements: 

  • Assisted with more than 3 of the following types of surgeries: Cardiac, ENT/Head and Neck, General Surgery, Gynecology, Neurosurgery, Dental, Ophthalmology, Orthopedic, Plastic, Vascular, Thoracic or Urology. Necessary credentials are required for confirmation
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing
  • Licensed and registered in any State, Territory or Commonwealth of the United States or Washington DC
  • Proficiency in both oral and written use of the English Language
  • More than five years of operating room experience with the most recent two years in the OR
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skill in surgical RN experience in orthopedics, neurology, general surgery, pen-vascular, plastics, ophthalmology, urology, ENT and cardiac/thoracic areas

Physical Requirements: 

  • Work in shifts of 8, 10 or 12 hours at a time
  • Maintain professionalism and concentration for long periods of time during surgical procedures
  • Be available for after hours and weekend call coverage for emergency procedures
  • Completion of VA training
  • Attend VA orientation
  • Adhere to background check requirements
