Richmond is home to Eastern Kentucky University and serves as the center for work and shopping for south central Kentucky and is the principal city of the Richmond–Berea Micropolitan Statistical Area, which includes all of Madison and Rockcastle counties. Founded in 1798, the city has numerous parks, the most prominent being Lake Reba Recreational Complex. Paradise Cove, the city's aquatic center, is located in the complex along with a horse shoe pit, putt-putt golf course, football field, soccer field, baseball and softball fields, and a playground. The downtown business district consists of many Victorian-style structures, including the Glyndon Hotel. The 2,000-seat EKU Center for the Arts houses the only theater in central Kentucky with a fly system, allowing quick set changes suitable for Broadway-type performances.

Baptist Health Richmond is a 105-bed acute care hospital that has served its community for more than 120 years. Residents in surrounding counties utilize Baptist Health Richmond for their care, including those in Madison, Estill, Garrard, Rockcastle, Lee and Jackson counties.
