Berwick Hospital Center

Facility & Community Description

From its founding in 1905, Berwick Hospital Center has played an integral role in the life of the community it serves. Today, this translates into a 101-bed, acute care facility, 240 long-term care beds in the Retirement Village Nursing Home, and a staff that prides itself in the complete continuum of care it provides, including a variety of highly services. Distinctive programs include specialized obstetric and gynecological services, oncology, advanced diagnostic imaging, same-day and laser surgery, balance testing and rehabilitation, and pain management. Outreach services are provided through Berwick Hospital Center Home Health Care, the Cardiopulmonary Treatment Center, a rehabilitation services department, occupational health services, 24-hour emergency services, patient and community education and hospice.

The Berwick city population is 12,500 while the service area population is over 65,000. Berwick's founder named the town after Berwick-Upon-Tweed, England, in 1786. The American sister city in Columbia County, Pennsylvania, overlooks the Susquehanna River, which has inspired Robert Lewis Stevenson, James Fenimore Cooper and Stephen Foster, among others. The chamber of business and industry serves an area population of about 25,000, with half of those living in Berwick. Berwick is located less than 150 miles from New York City and Philadelphia.

Pick your season and your activity. Golf courses abound, as do opportunities for sailing, golf, tennis, camping, hiking, hunting, fishing and snow-mobiling. Berwick is a ridge or two away from the Pocono Mountains' ski slopes and year-round resorts. The nearby Wilkes-Barre/Scranton area is home to farm teams for both the Philadelphia Phillies baseball club and the Pittsburgh Penguins ice hockey franchise. The area has preserved its past for today's enjoyment through efforts to preserve some 20 covered bridges, making Columbia County the nation's covered bridge capital.

Penn State campuses at Hazleton and Wilkes-Barre are also within easy driving distance, as are Wilkes, Bloomsburg, Susquehanna and Bucknell Universities, the University of Scranton, College Misericordia and Kings and Marywood Colleges.
