Although believed to have been named for the ragtime composer Scott Joplin who lived in Sedalia, Joplin is named for the Reverend Harris Joplin, an early settler and the founder of the area’s first Methodist congregation. Joplin was established in 1873 and expanded significantly from the wealth created by the mining of zinc. The city gained travelers as Route 66 passed through it and “Joplin, Missouri” is among the lyrics in Bobby Troup’s legendary song, immortalizing the city among others on the famous highway. Joplin has a vibrant, ever-expanding arts and cultural community that helps make it a great place to live.

Serving the community since 1896, Mercy Hospital Joplin is a brand-new facility offering a wide range of care to the community. This facility is a part of the Mercy health system, named one of the top five large U.S. health systems in 2018, 2017 and 2016 by IBM Watson Health. Mercy includes more than 40 acute care and specialty hospitals and 800 physician practices and outpatient facilities in Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma.
